Achievements

From 2006 to mid-2009, a number of projects were completed under the Camp Improvement Initiative (CII) to improve the living conditions of the refugees and the conditions in the camps. Among the completed projects were: the establishment of a clinical laboratory at the Nabatieh Health Centre, five ophthalmic clinics in five areas in Lebanon, two mobile dental clinics, and a part-time clinic was opened in Kfar Badda in Tyre area, all funded by the USA; 62 shelters repaired or reconstructed in Burj el-Barajneh and 54 in Burj el-Shemali, funded by Japan and Belgium respectively; and the provision of grants to 82 Palestine refugee entrepreneurs in order to re-establish their businesses that were destroyed during the July 2006 War, funded by Austria.
Since 2007, the GoL, UNRWA and their partners have focused much of their efforts in responding to the humanitarian crisis following the conflict that destroyed Nahr el Bared Camp (NBC). The CII out of necessity had to take a back seat as the various agencies, led by UNRWA, carried out emergency relief for the displaced refugees. Over the last two years
UNRWA has also been focusing on the preparations for the reconstruction of the destroyed camp. The NBC crisis resulted in much of the CII project work between 2007-2008 being scaled down or cancelled.
